{weekend happenings}

What a fun weekend! My in-laws (Mimi and Grandaddy) came on Friday morning and spent part of the weekend with us! Will is always so excited when anyone spends the night because that means he gets to “camp out” in the bonus room (our play area) while our guests sleep in his room.

They brought us yummy homemade desserts (both with from scratch crusts!)-fudge pie and rhubarb pie (this happened to be rhubarb from my parents’ garden) and three bags of blueberries from a local farm.

When they arrived on Friday, they took Will and Harper to a nearby park so I could have some “quiet time.”  It gave me the chance to organize our bonus room closet and sort items for a consignment sale and items to donate.

Fresh blueberries! All three bags are all gone! My kids eat these like candy!

Playing with Mimi’s phone and tablet. On Friday evening, they took the kids out to dinner while my husband and I went out for a nice, relaxing dinner sans kiddos.  We went to one of our favorite restaurants in town and had a great time! We called this our Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and birthday celebration all combined into one for us, ha! The last time we went on a “date” was back in December.

On Saturday, I made breakfast and we headed out the door to our local farmer’s market.

I gave Will the task of selecting some green beans for us.

Petting the dogs at the market.

We love to walk across an old bridge and up to a seating area that has great views of the town.  Will and Harper ran around for a while, splashing in puddles and burning off some energy!

A trip downtown is never complete without a visit to Pufferbellies, our favorite toy store!IMG_5442

For lunch, we headed to a local pizza place for a quick bite to eat.  Harper was having a meltdown and refused to sit in her high chair for lunch.  Will was getting tired as well, so as soon as we were finished, we headed home for naps.

After naps, we played more with Mimi and Grandaddy and enjoyed a yummy beer can chicken and grilled vegetables for dinner.  The kids were sad when Mimi and Grandaddy had to leave that evening.  We had a blast! Happy summertime:)

Mother’s Day Weekend 2014

Happy Mother’s Day! I hope you and your family had a wonderful weekend:) We had a great weekend!

On Friday afternoon after work, I stopped by our local toy store, Pufferbellies (I mention them a lot on my blog since they’re such a great store with a super staff) to pick up a free gift certificate. Pufferbellies gave away free gift certificates ranging from $3 to $20 all day Friday to any mother who came to the store. Last year and this year I received a $5 certificate. How cool is that?! They gave away over $1,000 in free gift certificates!

My sweet girl.

Will came home from preschool on Thursday with a secret gift for mommy. He was so excited about giving it to me and couldn’t wait until Sunday! I received a beautiful card and a vase of flowers with his picture in it. So sweet! Love you, Will!

On Saturday, we ate breakfast and headed to a local craft fair.  My childhood friend’s father sells his woodenware at the craft fair, so we always stop by to visit (he’s the one who makes the wooden stools you see Will and Harper sitting/standing on in my pics!).

I loved this jewelry from CameraSHY Photography, especially her custom photo necklaces.

We had fun wandering around the booths and browsing the beautiful crafts, but it was kind of hard with two kiddos who wanted to touch everything!

Our plan was to eat lunch at the craft fair but it started raining. We played for a few minutes on the playground before getting in the car and deciding to head to a new place for lunch.

My husband randomly found an awesome pizza place called Dr. Ho’s Humble Pie.   We ordered the Popeye pizza, which was topped with spinach, caramelized onions, artichoke hearts, roasted garlic, mozzarella, cheddar, and feta.  It was one of the best pizzas I have ever had! We both loved the roasted garlic on the pizza…now I’m on the hunt for some good roasted garlic recipes! This restaurant was very kid friendly too, which is a must for us right now! Any place that has crayons and paper for kids to draw is great!

As we headed back over the mountain on our way home, Will and Harper took a nap.

Before going home, we stopped at a local garden center to pick up a blueberry bush and a lily.

It was rainy, but Will and Harper had a blast running around the garden center and helping daddy push the wagon, as evidenced by Harper’s muddy shorts!

Today, we attended church and have been home hanging out all afternoon.  We tried our best to get a picture of me with the kiddos…this is one of the outtakes!

It’s hard to believe that I’m celebrating my fifth Mother’s Day! On my first Mother’s Day back in 2010, Will was only eight days old. Two years later, in 2012, we celebrated Mother’s Day with a two year old and sweet Harper, who was seven weeks old.  I love you, Will and Harper! You both bring so much joy and fun to my life:) Love ya!

Cupcakes and Cracker Barrel

Here’s a quick recap of our fun weekend!

On Thursday, Will turned four! He helped me make cupcakes for his preschool class and was so excited when he came home from school with a special birthday crown made by his preschool teacher.

Yummy cupcakes!

For Will’s birthday dinner, we gave him the choice of eating out at Panera, Cracker Barrel, or Chick-Fil-A. All day long he was set on going to Panera (which I was very excited about!) but after coming home from Nana’s, he had changed his mind and decided on Cracker Barrel.  The kids love going to Cracker Barrel and playing checkers:) Now Will is giving Mommy and Daddy three restaurants for us to choose from for our birthdays! Our birthdays are coming up within the next month, and I do have to say, he has given us some good choices for places to eat! I love this boy!

On Saturday morning, we headed downtown to the farmer’s market (our first visit of the year).  Before the farmer’s market, however, we stopped at a little bakery that makes the most delicious donuts.  I’m really picky about donuts and don’t like the store-bought kind.  I shared a donut with the kiddos and enjoyed the beautiful weather.

I had been wanting to stop at a fairly new eclectic shop downtown and finally got the chance.  It’s a fun shop full of all sorts of goodies…jewelry, candles, party supplies, etc.  If you’re looking for random items for a Pinterest project, this is the place to go!

We walked around the farmer’s market and enjoyed looking at the beautiful flowers and fresh spring produce.

Of course, no trip downtown is complete without  a visit to our local toy store, Pufferbellies.

And taking a ride on Sandy:)

On Sunday, we went to church, made our Trader Joe’s shopping trip, and played outside a bunch! I hope your weekend was super, too!

5 on Friday!

Happy Friday! I’m linking up with Carolina Charm and several other bloggers for 5 on Friday:)

{one} Panera Bread is one of our new favorite spots for eating out with kiddos.  A huge Panera opened up last year near us, and it has a nice play area.  We met a grandfather, his son, and two kiddos there last weekend. The grandfather came up to us and said that his son comes here about once a week with the kiddos, just because of the play area, ha! If you ask Will and Harper their favorite places to eat, they will say, “Depot, Cracker Barrel, Chick-Fil-A, Baja” and now, “Panera.”  The Depot is a local restaurant right next to the train station.  They enjoy eating there since we get to visit the cat who lives in the store next to the restaurant and because we usually head up the hill and over the bridge for a little walk.  This gives us a nice view of the city.  They enjoy Baja, a fresh Mex restaurant since the restaurant has cool doodle pads yummy chips and queso.  Cracker Barrel and Chick-Fil-A are loved for their food, and the kiddos now love Panera since they get to play after eating their meal.  Win for both parents and kiddos:)

{two} Spring is coming!  Below are some beautiful spring and Easter displays at our all time favorite toy store, Pufferbellies. I know I talk about Pufferbellies a lot, but it’s because it’s such a wonderful toy store (and because we go there A LOT!). I love looking at their creative window displays, which change frequently.  I’m loving the hippity, hoppity displays!

{three} Speaking of Pufferbellies, one cool thing they do is have birthday baskets for kiddos.  We started doing this last year when Will turned three. This year was our first year creating a birthday basket for Harper, and we plan on doing this each year. You select gifts your kiddos would like for their birthday and Pufferbellies displays them behind the counter.  It makes it very easy for people to pick out gifts for kiddos, and even out of town guests can purchase items from the wish list online.  The store will wrap the gifts and all you have to do is pick them up (or, they deliver if you are within a certain mile radius).  So fun!

{four} Does anyone else collect/use Fiestware? I went the non-traditional route when I got married and registered for Fiestaware. I initially wanted just a few colors, but after a few years, my collection grew into a rainbow of colors.  Each year, Fiestaware announces a new color. This year, they recently released a picture of their 2014 color, Poppy. While I like it, I was really hoping they would jump on the Pantene color of the year and go with a shade of purple.  However, I will purchase one piece of the new color to add to my collection.

{five} I’m loving Lisa Leonard’s new “My Wildflowers Necklace!” So pretty! She comes out with beautiful new pieces all the time!

Happy Friday!

Five on Friday!

Happy Friday! I’m linking up with Darci and friends for a fabulous Five on Friday:)

What a nice week! We went to school on Monday, had off Tuesday through Thursday due to snow, and now a two hour delay today! I could get used to this, ha! (Update- now we are off today! Four days in a row!)

{1} I’m loving these adorable Valentine’s plates I bought at Target the other week!  I’m not big on buying lots of seasonal items such as plates and cups for the kiddos (though they are so cute and fun), simply because I don’t feel that we get enough use out of them.  Plus, I’m trying to keep things more simple and don’t want lots of clutter around the house.  However, I couldn’t resist these! (They were pretty cheap and not too Valentine-ish, so we could use them throughout the year).

{2} Last weekend, we went downtown (in the freezing cold! It was like 20 degrees…brrrr) to our local toy store, Pufferbellies.  Will and Harper love playing with all the fun toys:) Here’s Harper making some music! After playing, we headed to a new cloth diaper store (see #3 and 4 below) and then to a coffee shop for some vanilla chai (me), a chocolate mocha (my husband) and a lemon poppyseed muffin (the kiddos).  Such a fun morning!

{3} While at the new cloth diaper store, I came across an organic laundry soap called Eco Nuts.  I have heard of the soap nuts and had always wanted to try them.  The nuts are a berry that grow on trees in the Himalayas.  All you do is put 4-5 nuts in a bag (it comes with two bags) and toss them into the washer.  We have an HE washing machine, and they work just fine! I washed several loads of laundry with the eco nuts and they worked well (there’s just no fragrance)!  I’m trying to purchase/make more natural household items, and these are so cool!  You reuse the nuts up to ten times and they are compostable.

{4} My reason for checking out the cloth diaper store was to purchase these training pants for Will.  He has been potty trained since last summer but has been wearing a diaper at night.  He is typically completely dry in the mornings, so I wanted to buy these training pants to use.  One thing I regret not doing with my kiddos is cloth diapering.  I didn’t know anyone who cloth diapered when Will was born and was so overwhelmed with him as a baby (nursing, going back to work, pumping, in general he was a fussy baby, etc.) that I didn’t think much about cloth diapering.  I briefly considered it when Harper was born, but I didn’t follow through with it (I really wish I had, though).  Anyway, we have been using the training pants and Will loves them!  He is such a big boy now!

{5} Oh, Target!  In case you haven’t noticed, I’m a little obsessed with Target.   I go there on an almost weekly basis.  Here’s some of their most recent Valentines items.  I bought some heart candy cups and plan on making this s’mores mix.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Labor Day Weekend Fun!

hew, we had a fun-filled, busy weekend! Here’s a quick recap.

On Saturday, we went to our local farmer’s market and walked around downtown. We also went to our favorite toy store, Pufferbellies. Later that day, it was pretty dreary and rained, so we hung out at home. The weather cleared up later that evening, so we headed outside to play with some new toys.

On Sunday, we went on the Skyline Drive and hiked up Bear Den Mountain Trail. We were so proud of Will-he walked up and back! Miss H. was in the backpack and fell asleep on the way back down the mountain. Round trip it was over two miles. The Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway are so close to our house, but we haven’t gone up there since before kiddos (and we’ve never been on the BRP near our house). We bought a year pass to the Skyline Drive and want to go on more trails. It will be especially pretty once fall is here:) I’d love to go to Humpback Rocks and Crabtree Falls (never been to either).

On Monday, we went to a local park with our neighbors. We ate a picnic lunch and played, fed the ducks in the pond, and rode a free mini train ride. Afterwards, we went downtown for some ice cream.

It was a super fun and busy weekend! So glad to have this time off with my family:)
