{oh hey friday!}

IMG_4160.PNG

Happy Friday! I’m linking up today with Amy and Karli for oh hey Friday!

{one} If you have a Trader Joe’s near you, stop what you’re doing and go buy this cashew butter! It is SO GOOD! The kids and I have been eating it on apples, but it’s delicious just by the spoonful. Yum!IMG_5218.JPG

{two} Now that I’m back to school, Will and Harper go to Nana’s each morning. Earlier in the week, Will was out helping Nana pick vegetables in her garden and brought home these goodies for mommy. How fun! I love that my kids are able to explore and play on a farm.IMG_5216.JPG

{three} Cousin fun! Last weekend when we went home to the state fair, we got to visit Will and Harper’s cousins. We played outside, took walks, and enjoyed a yummy dinner together. Although their cousins live in Kentucky, we have been able to visit them several times this summer at Mimi and Grandaddy’s house. IMG_5197.JPG{four} I usually always have pictures for each of my topics, but as I was uploading additional pictures for this post, I got a message saying that I had maxed out on my allotted space for wordpress. Uh oh. Fortunately, this summer my brother started helping me transition to a different site. Unfortunately, I have no clue what I’m doing, ha! Luckily, he does, but we’re having to communicate via texts since he’s in NC.

{five} So I’m on the hunt for the perfect blog template. I’ve been browsing Etsy but there are just so many to choose from…it’s hard to narrow them down. Eventually, my new site will be harperandwill.com but in the meantime, my blog might be pretty quiet as I try to transition to the new site. Again, any suggestions/feedback on this would be most helpful!

Have a great weekend:)

{fair fun! // it’s the little things}

Last week, we headed to our local county fair for a night of fun. Harper and Will received free gate passes from their summer reading program (sidenote: we got some nice prizes from our local libraries-free passes to a bounce house, free books, fair tickets, coupons for free fro yo, and Harper won one of the end of summer raffles, which was a $10 gift certificate to a local Mexican restaurant that we all love!). Anyway, this was our first time going to our county fair.  I grew up going to the State Fair of West Virginia (in my hometown), so our county fair was quite small. However, we got to pet some animals, look at fun exhibits, and check out the fun rides (though we didn’t ride any).

Milking cows…you’d think that my kiddos would be tired of seeing cows since we live right beside a dairy farm, but no, they love cows!

This is a really neat sensory activity! A swimming pool full of corn with scoopers and toys. Harper and Will could have stayed there for hours playing in it!IMG_5126.JPG

Last weekend, we headed to the WV State Fair for one last hurrah before I had to go back to work.

IMG_9421

Although it was very cloudy, it didn’t rain at all. It was actually nice weather-not too hot. IMG_9426Will LOVED the rides! We only bought a few tickets because they were pricy and we weren’t sure how much the kids would ride.  Well, next year we will be buying the ride bracelets which lets the kiddos have unlimited access to the rides!IMG_9463I rode the carousel with Will and Harper. IMG_9436IMG_9471Daddy and Harper on the Teacup ride!IMG_9488Silly pic!IMG_9509

IMG_9516 IMG_9547Eating some yummy Ben Ellen Donuts (a fair favorite-they taste like nutmeg!).IMG_9578While watching Galaxy Girl spin around and climb the tower…yikes!IMG_9585Checking out all the animals.IMG_9599They even have a cow birthing center set up! Two calves were born that morning and there were about a dozen cows who were about to give birth! IMG_9621Petting the horses. Will and Harper absolutely love horses! They talk about visiting the horses in the horse barn at Nana’s all the time. IMG_9629Trying their hand at weaving. IMG_9641 We also enjoyed some delicious German chocolate ice cream-yum! The kiddos had a blast and we can’t wait to go back next summer!

Happy Friday! It’s my last Friday before school starts, boo:(

Anyway, I’m looking forward to a busy, fun weekend and I’m linking up with Karli and Amy for oh hey Friday!

{one} Last weekend, Mimi and Grandaddy came for a visit (my in-laws). We had a great time playing outside, reading books, and going out for dinner. My mom is here today to visit, so the kids and I are going to have a fun day with Grammy! Soaking up the last few days of summer. 20140806-145438-53678447.jpg

{two} We have a tiny garden with a few pepper and tomato plants, along with some zucchini and basil. I checked the garden recently and picked these yummy cherry tomatoes and a pepper. Fresh veggies=the best!20140806-145437-53677904.jpg

{three} Goldfish+kids=successful Target trip. Ha! This is the only way I can keep both kids contained in a cart at Target lately-our first stop is to the food section where each kiddo gets their own goldfish container. It keeps them occupied and me able to shop at Target for approximately 18.3 minutes! And as you can see from the picture below, there was still lots of arguing about the placement of their feet.  20140806-145437-53677682.jpg

{four} Do you cook with quinoa? I have cooked with it several times but want to incorporate it into our meals more. I recently made a quinoa and black bean casserole, which turned out great. Of course, as is always the case, only one kiddo liked it. It’s really hard to find a recipe that both kids like. I think Harper ate enough to make up for what Will didn’t eat though, ha!

20140806-145438-53678175.jpg

{five} Look at these curls! Lately, Harper’s hair has become more curly. I love it! I wish it would stay this way! It’s getting so long, too. Love it! And the blond hair too, that can stay! I don’t want it to turn darker. Love my two blond-haired kiddos:)

20140806-145437-53677246.jpg

20140806-145437-53677469.jpgI hope you have a great, relaxing weekend!

{take your kids to work day // it’s the little things}

Happy Wednesday! Yesterday, my husband’s company had a take your kids to work day. He’s an airplane mechanic for a local company. While Harper and Will were too young for the majority of the activities, I took them after work yesterday to look around the airport and see what daddy does at work. Once the kids are six, they are able to spend the entire day at work, which is so cool! The kids get to shadow their parents in the morning and in the afternoon there are specific activities for them.

Afterwards, the kids enjoyed cookies and lemonade outside.

20140806-080859-29339020.jpgIt was a fun time, but I’m really looking forward to when they’re able to shadow at work and stay all day!

20140727-114745-42465153.jpg

Happy Friday:) I’m linking up with Karli and Amy for oh hey Friday! I can’t believe it’s already August!

{one} I recently discovered a huge wealth of kids’ consignment clothes on Instagram! I happened upon Jenny Collier’s Instagram resale shop and bought a few cute clothes for Harper. Do you have any favorite Instagram shops where you buy used kids’ clothes? I’d love to hear what they are!
20140727-115415-42855150.jpg

{two} Miss Harper…this girl is so particular about her shoes. She absolutely hates these adorable sandals and throws a fit when we put them on her. She would rather wear her Crocs or rain boots. No kidding-as soon as we got back home, she took off these sandals and put on her red cupcake boots! Silly girl:)20140727-115415-42855597.jpg{three} I completed my last summer teacher workday this week, yahoo! Now I have one more full week off before school starts. It always feels so much better to have my room all unpacked and ready to go! Here’s the before:20140727-115416-42856394.jpgAnd after! Much better. Those piles of boxes everywhere were driving me crazy!20140727-115416-42856906.jpg{four} We’ve been enjoying some cooler temps here in Virginia this week-low 70s and down in the 50s at night! It seems like fall is coming soon! The kiddos requested to eat lunch outside the other day, which was great for me, since it means less of a mess to clean up:)20140727-115415-42855991.jpg{five} Summer grilling! We grilled a delicious meal of pesto scallops and zucchini. I love the nights we grill since that means I just do the prep work (cutting up the zucchini, etc) and my husband does the rest! I could get used to this, ha!20140727-115417-42857728.jpgWe cooked the corn in the microwave with the husk still on, which turned out great! This method made it so easy to remove the husk and silk!20140727-115417-42857291.jpgI hope you have a great summer weekend:)

{planes // and other summer happenings}

Here’s what we’ve been up to lately…

My husband’s company reserved a bunch of tickets at a local theater to see Planes: Fire and Rescue last Saturday, so we took both kiddos to see it (my hubby works for an aviation company).  Free movies-yahoo! It was a cute movie, but Harper and Will were ready to get up and move about halfway into it. It didn’t help that the movie was right in the middle of nap times, so they both skipped naps that day. 20140727-143555-52555993.jpg

Harper and Will love craft projects, so we’ve been doing lots of crafts lately. 20140727-143556-52556728.jpg

Wagon rides to see our neighbor’s horse and donkey. 20140727-143558-52558733.jpg

Fresh veggies for dinner! Corn on the cob!20140727-143559-52559635.jpg20140727-143559-52559250.jpg

Last week, we headed to Barnes and Noble for story time. It was our first time going to the bookstore for story time since it’s about a 30 minute drive for us. However, we wanted to go see the special story time guest, Madeline!

20140727-143557-52557876.jpg

Plus, the kids just had to play with the train set at the bookstore! Will loves trains and plays for long periods of time in our bonus room creating new tracks. 20140727-143557-52557086.jpg

Outside rock playing time. All they need is a dump truck and rocks, and they will play for a while!20140727-143558-52558285.jpg

Checking out our mini garden to see which vegetables are ripe. 20140727-143558-52558511.jpg

We’re squeezing in as much summertime fun in the next few weeks before school starts!

{beach 2014 recap}

We recently got back from a week long vacation in Duck, North Carolina on the Outer Banks. I’ve been going to Duck every other year for a while now with my family. We were trying to remember when we first started going-sometime back in the early ’90s. Every time we go to Duck, we stay on the same street and usually have extended family members who stay in other houses right up the street from us. When we went in 2010, my mom’s family had four houses on the same street! How fun!

This year, my parents, my oldest brother and his wife and two children, my younger brother, and my youngest brother and his wife all shared a house with us.

Just a quick look back at Harper’s first time at the beach in 2012 and this summer. My how much she has changed! She likes the ocean a lot better this time, ha!
Harper beach collage

And here is Will-he’s been three times, but this most recent trip was his favorite. He didn’t really remember much about the beach before this summer. Will beach collageWe stayed in a wonderful house this year-a three story house with six bedrooms, five bathrooms, a nice pool outside. Last time we went, we were in a four bedroom, two bathroom house, which was difficult with 13 people (including four kiddos).

Our house was quite kid-friendly as well. The top level, which included a big kitchen, open dining area, large living room and a bathroom, had a built in baby gate. The house also included two high chairs and a crib! We still took along our pack n play for Harper to use, as well as her booster seat since I didn’t know the house came with high chairs.

The bottom level of our house had two king size bedrooms with attached bathrooms. It also had a nice lounge area with a tv and mini kitchen.

We stayed on the second level, which included four bedrooms and two bathrooms. Will shared a room with his almost 6 year old cousin, O. Harper stayed in our room and actually did okay sleeping (she usually doesn’t sleep as well when she’s in the same room as us). Our bedroom had direct access to the deck and views of the ocean:)

Our week consisted of swimming in the ocean in the mornings, lunch and naps, then pool time in the afternoons. Lots of staying up late (for the kiddos) and tons of fun!

{Note-this post is full of pics!}

Attempting to get a group picture of the cousins. Harper wasn’t very happy about it. We had a 2, 3, 4, and 5 year old at our beach house.
IMG_6910

Each morning we walked down to the beach. The only downfall to our house was its location. It was about a 10 minute (with kids) walk to the beach.
IMG_6925

Getting our chairs and tent set up.  See my brother in the background? They call me Mamarazzi? Well, I’m going to call him Paparazzi, ha!

IMG_6935Harper loved playing in the sand but wasn’t too thrilled about the waves. I took her in the ocean several times and she screamed and clung on to me when the waves came up.

Eating snacks with Grammy. Boy, this girl loves to eat!
IMG_6995

Will loved the sand but also enjoyed getting in the water.
IMG_7008

He even went out on the boogie board and rode in some waves!
IMG_7012

More pool time. I’m glad I invested in these Speedo life jackets for both Harper and Will. Any time we were out at the pool they wore them. I also bought a reusable swimming diaper cover made by Speedo for Harper. It worked great, and I loved not having to deal with the disposable swimmy diapers.

Hanging out in the beach tent. This was a great buy!
IMG_7279

More snacking by the pool. It might seem like all my kids do is eat, since most of these pictures show them with food! That’s when they are sitting still and when I can manage to get some pics, ha!

One day we ate lunch outside after pool time.

In the town of Duck, there is a neat boardwalk that goes along the sound. We strolled on it several times.

Eating meals together as a family. Each night, one of the siblings was in charge of dinner. For my night, I made honey chicken lime enchiladas (I made them at home and froze them, which made dinner so much easier) and guac and chips and salsa.

While at the beach, we celebrated my nephew O’s upcoming 6th birthday. Since Will’s aunt and uncle from NC couldn’t come to Will’s birthday party back in May, we also had a mini birthday celebration for him as well. My sister-in-law also had goodies for the girls-stickers and mermaid tattoos, as well as some cool Kinder Surprise Eggs from her recent trip to Europe.
IMG_7712

Here’s a picture of Harper with her great grandmother. My grandparents (mom’s parents) stayed in a beach house right down the street from us (and yes, she’s sporting a mermaid tattoo on her arm!).

The kiddos being creative with their play.
IMG_7807

My oldest brother created a huge sand pit one day at the beach. It was so big that from out in the ocean, you couldn’t see Harper (though it doesn’t take much since she’s so small, ha!).
